Common Diagnostic Services for Pets in Jacksonville FL

Once your veterinarian has obtained a complete history from you about your pet and then conducted a thorough physical exam, they will then order cost-effective diagnostic tests to determine the cause of your pet’s illness or condition. Usually, they will order general screening tests such as a urinalysis or a complete blood count first with more sophisticated tests such as CT scans, following later as required.

What are some of the Common Diagnostic Services for Pets?

A commonly used screening test for pets is the Complete Blood Count (CBC), a blood test that helps to detect viral infections, bacterial infections, the presence of anemia, and certain types of cancer.

Another screening test is the Blood Chemistry Profile, a blood test that helps detect metabolic abnormalities such as dehydration and diabetes and kidney and liver disease.

The urinalysis (UA) test helps determine if a urinary tract infection is present.

If the urinalysis shows a bladder infection, your pet doctor can use a urine culture to identify the bacteria causing the urinary tract infection to determine which antibiotics would be best to treat it.

Fecal Analysis of the stool is an additional test that helps determine parasitic worms or bacterial intestinal infections.

Skin Scrapings can be used to help determine the presence of external skin parasites or diseases.

An EKG can determine if heart disease is present and if the heart rhythm and rate are normal.

Radiographs (x-rays) can determine if there are broken bones present.
